6. The University of Évora

The University of Évora is one of Portugal’s oldest and most prestigious academic institutions. Founded in 1559 by Cardinal Henry, it was initially run by the Jesuits and became a center for theological and philosophical studies.
The university played a crucial role in the intellectual and scientific development of Portugal until its closure in 1759 when the Jesuits were expelled. It was reopened in 1973 and has since continued to uphold its tradition of academic excellence.
The university’s architecture is remarkable, with the Colégio do Espírito Santo being the main building. It features beautiful cloisters, traditional blue-and-white azulejos (tiles), and historical lecture halls that transport visitors back in time.
Today, the University of Évora is known for its programs in the humanities, sciences, and technology, attracting students from all over the world.
