Castillo de la Duquesa

Introduction

At the Official School of Languages of Estepona (EOI Estepona), we believe that heritage is a powerful tool for learning languages. It stimulates curiosity, critical thinking, and cultural awareness—key elements for meaningful communication and intercultural understanding.

As part of our Languages and Heritage Project, this didactic unit connects language learning with historical and cultural exploration through a visit to Castillo de la Duquesa, an archaeological and historical site located in Manilva. This 18th-century fortress, built on Roman remains, offers a unique opportunity to discover the rich history of the Costa del Sol—from ancient settlements to modern times.

This unit invites students to explore how places and objects from the past can tell stories and evoke emotions, while practicing language structures related to past tenses, description, and personal storytelling. Through guided oral and written activities, learners will develop their communicative skills by describing the site, imagining past events, and comparing different periods of history.

By integrating local culture, history, and language, the unit aims to bring real-life inspiration into the classroom and open the door to learning beyond the textbook—connecting students’ linguistic growth with the fascinating cultural and historical landscape of Manilva and the Costa del Sol.
